and experiments to do!
HANDWASHING

Supplies:

  • Cooking oil
  • Cinnamon
  • Measuring spoons

INTRODUCTION TO THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD PART 1:

Read through the whole experiment first and explain to your child what you are about to do.  Ask them to predict  the outcome of the experiment.

EXPERIMENT:

Ideally, you need three participants for this experiment.

If you don’t have three participants then just do the experiment with your child.  Let your child be Person 1, you be Person 2, and disregard the instructions for Person 3.

All three participants should rub 1 tablespoon of oil all over hands until completely coated.

Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of cinnamon on hands and rub it around until it is evenly distributed.  Explain that the cinnamon is like bacteria that we can’t see.

Wash hands as follows, rubbing them briskly for 20 seconds (set a timer):

Person 1: wash hands with cold water and no soap

Person 2: wash hands with warm water and no soap

Person 3: wash hands with warm water and soap

An alternate way to do this experiment is to use only warm water and soap and have the participants vary the amount of time rubbing hands as follows:

Person 1:  5 seconds

Person 2:  10 seconds

Person 3:  20 seconds

INTRODUCTION TO THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD PART 2:

Observe the outcome of the experiment and record (or discuss) the results.

Compare the outcome to the original hypothesis.

INTRODUCTION TO THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD PART 3:

Draw conclusions.  Discuss what was learned from the experiment.  Here are some suggestions discussion questions:

How can handwashing affect your family’s health?

What difference does soap make?

What difference does the water temperature make?

DO A NARRATION PAGE!  This experiment is a terrific time to do a narration page
